Child Passenger Safety Week
By: County of Orange Fire & EMS Department September 20-26, 2026 🚗 Child Passenger Safety Week The Right Seat. The Right Fit. Every Ride.
Child Passenger Safety Week is a great reminder to make sure children are riding safely every time they get in the car. Car seats and booster seats are designed to protect children, but they need to be used correctly to provide the best protection.
👶 Check the Car Seat Take a few minutes to make sure:
Your child's car seat is appropriate for their age, height, and weight. The seat is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions. The harness fits snugly and is positioned correctly. The car seat has not expired or been involved in a crash. Everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained on every trip.
🔄 Keep Children Rear-Facing as Long as Recommended Children are safest when they remain rear-facing until they reach the maximum height or weight allowed by their car seat. Once they outgrow a rear-facing seat, they can transition to a forward-facing seat with a harness and continue using it according to the manufacturer's guidelines. 🪑 Don't Rush to the Booster Seat After outgrowing a forward-facing car seat, children generally need a booster seat until the vehicle's seat belt fits them properly. If your child is using a booster seat, always use the vehicle's seat belt with it. The lap belt should fit low across the upper thighs, and the shoulder belt should fit snugly across the shoulder and chest—not across the stomach, neck, or face. 🚙 Buckle Up, Every Time Everyone in the vehicle should wear a seat belt on every trip, every time—even for a short drive. Adults set the example, so make sure you're buckled up, too. Children should ride in the back seat whenever possible, and the vehicle should not move until everyone is properly restrained.
