To help local fathers build their skills and be active, engaged participants in the lives of their children, the Office on Youth is launching 24:7 Dad , a program of the National Fatherhood Initiative. ® Orange County Office on Youth Launches Program to Help Fathers Build Their Skills By: Robyn Chapman, Grant Programs Manager, Orange County Office On Youth Area dads are invited to participate in a 4-session workshop that will give them the parenting, relationship, and communication skills they need to be involved, responsible, and committed fathers. The program will be facilitated by two Orange County dads. Beginning Monday, October 5, the program will run for four consecutive Mondays at Orange Baptist Church. Each session starts at 6:00 p.m. Dinner, childcare, and a $10 Sheetz gas card (each night) will be provided for each registered father. “NFI is excited about Orange County Office on Youth’s efforts to help fathers build their skills through the 24:7 Dad program,” said Christopher Brown, President of National Fatherhood Initiative. “Research shows that a major barrier to father involvement is a lack of skills in dads, many of whom grew up without fathers in their lives. At a time when 1 in 4 children live in father-absent homes, the Orange County Office on Youth should be applauded for its efforts to help dads get involved.” ® Developed by fathering and parenting experts, 24:7 Dad is the most widely-used evidence-based program designed specifically for fathers. It focuses on the characteristics that men need to be involved fathers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This community-based program helps men develop the attitudes, knowledge, and skills they need to get—and stay—involved with their children. The program focuses on key fathering characteristics—like masculinity, discipline, and work/family balance—and helps men evaluate their own parenting skills, as well as their fathering role models. ® For additional information about the National Fatherhood Initiative, visit www.fatherhood.org.
